Historical Background

Since 1972, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has been tasked with protecting the sites that hold cutural or natural significance. These sites have been identified as holding the key to our past, a part of our heritage. Sites that hold either cultural or natural significance can be added to the list through first being added to the Tentative List. The Tentative List is reviewed annually by the International Council on Monuments and Sites and the World Conservation Union, before then being sent on to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee if recommended.

The 'Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage' is an international treaty that was ratified by 193 UN Member States (189) and other territories. This treaty provides for the protection of sites that have been designated Heritage Sites under the Geneva Convention and other international treaties. In addition to providing legal protection to sites, UNESCO can also identify a site as endangered allowing for additional protection and conservation for the site, or in some cases (two to date) delisting.
